Sometimes, all you need to interrupt your train of thought is action. Something as simple as getting up to throw away a piece of trash can snap you back into reality and pull you out of a funk.
If that doesn’t work, opt for something bigger, like a hot shower or preparing some food. Activities like these require your brain to refocus itself on alternative tasks, and they also change your physical location, which can act as a refresh button on your mind.
You should also know that sometimes anxiety is caused by a buildup of adrenaline, which can be cured by something as simple as a walk. Fresh air can improve your well-being, and one study even found that people who took a walking trip to a wooded area had lowered the production of stress hormones than when they remained in a city (https://bit.ly/2gHt29z).
If you don’t live in a walking-friendly neighborhood, opt to take a trip to a big box store or the mall. No transportation? Look up some yoga videos on the Internet to follow along with. At the very least, stop what you’re doing and make yourself do 20 jumping jacks.
Even something simple as listening to nature sounds such as a river or birds on your phone or computer has been proven to calm people down and reduce stress and anxiety.
