How to use essential oils to support digestive issues

7/29/2019

We are almost done with the essential oil topic series. Today I want to spend a little time talking about a topic that is not commonly associated with essential oils. That is how essential oils can be used to help your digestion and nutrient absorption.

Several essential oils such as ginger, peppermint, fennel, lemongrass, and marjoram are noted for improving digestion. Some oils relieve upset

stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, and IBS, while others stimulate digestive enzymes to aid nutrient breakdown and absorption.
Here is a list of some helpful essential oils for digestion support:
  • Ginger essential oil. Ginger helps maintain optimal digestive function and reflex regulation of the GI tract. It also improves nutrient absorption by stimulating serotonin receptors in the gut.
  • Tarragon essential oil. This oil also, helps promote digestion and absorption of nutrients by lubricating the intestinal trac.
  • Oregano essential oil. Oregano helps the secretion of digestive juices and balance out gut microbiome.
  • Peppermint essential oil. This oil helps relax the muscles of the intestines to assist digestion and reduce bloating and gas.
  • Thyme essential oil. This oil promotes detoxification through urination. As well as balances out the microbiome in the gut.
  • Clove helps relieve stomach upset by relaxing muscle tissues of the digestive tract. As well as reduces inflammation within the intestinal lining.
These essential oils can be added to your cooking or diluted and applied topically over the abdomen 2-3 times per day. Or you can also:
  • To use as a supplement, add one drop of essential oil to 4 fluid ounces of a liquid, mixed well and consume. †
  • Place a drop in an empty supplement capsule
  • Mix one drop of essential oil or essential oil formula with one tablespoon of honey or coconut oil. Add the mixture to 4oz of warm milk or water and consume
  • For occasional stomach upset, apply one drop of diluted essential oil to the stomach area.
  • For occasional tummy discomfort, drink one drop in a beverage (mix well). †
  • Rub a drop of essential oil on the stomach area before travel.
  • Give yourself a soothing abdominal massage to relax that area by combining a few drops of essential with a carrier oil.
