Drinking of Damiana tea or cordial easily replaces alcohol for social occasions and many have reported that they desire less alcohol after drinking Damiana.
Ancient Aztecs used the leaves as a powerful sexual tonic and stimulant. It is also used as a nerve tonic and is slightly warming and stimulating, but not like caffeine. In fact, it has a relaxing effect not-unlike low doses of cannabis. Some people enjoy smoking two pinches of Damiana with a pinch of peppermint, blue lotus, rose petals or passion flower. It is also an anti-depressant and urinary antiseptic. Important: Damiana is uncontrolled in the United States. This means all parts of the plant and its extracts are legal to cultivate, buy, possess, and distribute (sell, trade or give) without a license or prescription. However, the state of Lousiana considers Damiana not legal for human consumption. The law states: Effective Aug 8, 2005 (signed into law Jun 28, 2005) Louisiana Act No 159 makes 40 plants illegal, including Damiana (Turnera diffusa), when intended for human consumption. The law specifically excludes the "possession, planting, cultivation, growing, or harvesting" of these plants if used "strictly for aesthetic, landscaping, or decorative purposes." (Act No. 565; House Bill No. 173, 2010. (last updated Sep 29 2011). DAMIANA IS LEGAL IN ANY OTHER STATE IN THE U.S. FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.
