The 11 Best Essential Oils for Dry Skin

By Dr. Toni Camacho, best-selling author, herbalist and wellness counselor
If your skin tends to look flaky, rough, and feel itchy. These are all signs of dry skin, and it can happen on your face, arms, legs, or anywhere on your body. Essential oils are one of the best ways to replenish your skin's moisture. Essential oils that help treat dry skin don’t just moisturize, they also calm and soothe the skin.
There are many wonderful essential oils for dry skin that work to hydrate and soothe naturally. However, these eleven are some of the best choices to help combat dry skin:
1. Lavender. Has many health benefits for skin; mainly, it is good for soothing rough, dry, and irritated skin and may be also helpful for reducing scarring.

2. Patchouli. Can alleviate skin issues, and it’s considered one of best home remedies for acne, as well as for eczema, inflammation, and cracked, chapped or irritated skin. It has cell-rejuvenating properties; it has the power to lessen the look of scars or marks.
3. Frankincense. Anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Frankincense heals wounds, dry or cracked skin, and prevents premature aging. It also can strengthen skin and improve tone and elasticity; it has been commonly used to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

4. Ylang ylang. Is anti-inflammatory, promotes healing and soothes pain. Ylang Ylang is also antiseptic and prevents wounds from being infected
5. Helichrysum. It is anti-aging and scar reducing, hydrating for the skin and helps block UV damage. It can also apply for bruises, burns, dry and itchy skin, acne, sun-damaged skin
6. Cedarwood. Often used to improve dry or flaky scalp. Cedarwood improves skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Promotes hair growth, helps treat acne. It is astringent. Therefore, it helps close pores and tightens skin. Cedarwood can also be used to reduce inflammation around irritations and to clear blemishes
7. Saldalwood. Sandalwood is rich in antioxidants and helps prevent wrinkles. It has also been used to whiten skin, cure acne, tone skin, and to reduce the appearance of scars.

8. Chamomile. Useful to treat acne, eczema, skin rashes, sunburn, and dandruff. Moisturizes skin is anti-inflammatory and anti-aging. Minimizes the appearance of scars and improves skin tone. Chamomile also has skin repairing, regenerating, and strengthening properties, which helps keep your skin young and refreshed.
9. Geranium. Is one of my go-to essential oils and is in almost all my skin care products because even those with sensitive skin can use it without issues. Geranium Is an antiseptic and wound-healing. Therefore, it helps treat acne — one of the best oils for skin including oily or congested skin, eczema, and dermatitis. It also an excellent treatment of aging, wrinkled and dry skin; It tightens skin and slows down the effects of aging.
10. Clary sage. Helps heal rashes and reduce inflammation.  It also helps to manage and balance the production of the natural oils inside the skin, regulates both dry and oily skin. Makes your skin look beautiful and young.

11. Myrrh. Soothes chapped or cracked skin. It moisturizes skin, prevents premature aging and maintains healthy skin. Myrrh oil also promotes faster healing of skin wounds.
Never use an essential oil straight on your skin, nearly all essential oils should be heavily diluted with a carrier oil or lotion before application. Like in this is a wonderful and simple body oil recipe that you can make at home:
SOOTHING BODY OIL FOR DRY SKIN – RECIPE
Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces Organic Argan Oil
6 1/2 ounces Organic Sesame Oil
48 drops Essential Oils of your choice (6 drops to 1 oz of carrier oil), for this recipe I like to use:
  • 20 drops Frankincense
  • 10 drops lavender
  • 8 drops myrrh
  • 10 drops geranium.

Instructions
Pour all ingredients into a dark glass bottle with a nozzle. Store in a dark, cool cupboard. Shake before use. Apply liberally to the skin. Although you can use your oil right away, it's best to let your oil sit for a couple of weeks before you use it. This allows the essential oils scents to combine and fuse. Otherwise, the scent will be less fragrant, and the oils will not have had as much time to blend into one scent.
Always remember when it comes to choosing the right essential oil for your skin, what works for one person may not work for another — it’s important to consider your allergies and sensitivities because some essential oils can be irritating to people with sensitive skin or allergies. The best way to make sure an essential oil won’t irritate is to test in a small area first, for example on the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours.

Toni
